Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

Viking will consider applicants that are due to complete or who have completed their 'A' levels / 'Higher examinations and who have attained the industry recognised level of 120 UCAS Points.

Candidates that have attained this academic level are older, therefore more mature and capable of dealing with the academic work and demanding environment on cruise vessels. 'A' levels or 'Highers' entry also provides the trainee with exemption from some of the curriculum allowing him/her to progress more quickly to the final training qualification.

Acceptable qualifications are:

  • 2 'A' levels/Highers, one of which must be Mathematics or Physics
  • And a minimum of 5 GCSE's or Standard Grade passes generally at grade B or above, including Maths, English and a Physics-based Science
  • Or an appropriate National Diploma or Scottish National Certificate

The regulatory authority for the marine industry stipulates that trainees are only acceptable if they meet their medical examinations standards. Additional, prospective deck officers will need to pass their colour and form vision test, demonstrating the absence of any colour deficiency.

Our selected trainees will need to be of the calibre required to progress in the premier end of the cruise industry. We therefore look for a number of qualities. These include, but are not restricted to, a real interest, determination, resilience, flexibility and a positive, enthusiastic approach. All of this allied to a personable appearance and pleasant, helpful disposition.

For those applicants who have recently passed an Engineering based degree (BSc or BEng), or industry based apprenticeship, and who display a mature outlook on life, we are able to offer a "fast track" system. Eligibility for this type of route will also be determined by the MCA's provision of a "Letter of Assessment", defining the exact make-up of your training. For further information in regards to this level of entrance, please contact the Training Manager.
