Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering (leading to full BEng (Hons) in Marine Engineering Management and MCA Certificate of Competency)

Training is of a sandwich type, consisting of alternating college and sea phases.

The overall duration for an engineer officer trainee is around 3 years. The initial qualifications allow you to be proficient in monitoring the engine room of a vessel at sea. In your cadetship and ongoing development you will learn the essentials of engineering knowledge including diesel propulsion, electrics, electronics and many other related topics.

Overall they will give you the knowledge, confidence and self-discipline to be successful at sea or in the industry framework ashore.

General Induction to the shipping industry
Phase 1 25 weeks

Foundation Degree - subjects include:

  • Marine Auxiliary Systems Principles
  • Work Based Investigation
  • Workshop skills Training
Phase 2 24 weeks At Sea
Phase 3 30 weeks

  • Mechanics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Ship Construction
  • Further Mathematics
  • Instrumentation and Control Principles
  • Engineering Management
  • Ship Stability
  • Engineering Design and Project
  • Further Mechanics
  • Further Thermodynamics
  • Work Based Investigation
  • Workshop Skills Training
Phase 4 23 weeks At Sea
Phase 5
(part 1)		 14 weeks

Foundation Degree - subjects include:

  • Advanced Marine Electrics
  • Further Thermodynamics
  • Further Mechanics

Consolidation of Work Based Learning and any outstanding academic assessments prior to the award of:
Foundation Degree (FdSC) in
Marine Engineering
Phase 5
(part 2)		 6 weeks

STCW short courses:
Medical First Aid, AFF, PSC & RB
Workshop Skills Training

MCA Orals Preparation

Successful completion of MCA Oral examinations leads to award of initial:
MCA Certificate of Competency
    Completion of Cadetship*

* Option to continue on to full Honours Degree
