Merchant navy safety training includes Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSC&RB) which also includes training on davit launched lifeboats. However most of the vessels in the private and commercial yacht sector are not large enough to carry davit launched lifeboats. Therefore, when the MCA developed their “Large Yacht Code” they devised an equivalent “PSC&RB” course for Yachts; the NON STCW - 3 day course was called the “Advanced Sea Survival”.
The Advanced Sea Survival course was an MCA initiative and was not an international requirement. Now as part of the Manila Amendments 2010 the PSC&RB and also, by implication, the Advanced Sea Survival must be updated. The MCA’s answer to this situation is to offer the PSC&RB (Restricted) to update the Advanced Sea Survival. This certificate is for Yacht staff on vessels that do not carry lifeboats. We are now issuing an STCW (Restricted) Certificate to update the NON STCW Advanced Sea Survival qualification.
The Maritime Skills Academy can provide the training for the full course, the full course (restricted) and also the updating training for both.
