History

Our founder and Managing Director, Dieter Jaenicke established Viking Recruitment in 1988 specifically to supply British Deck, Engine, Electrical and Communications officers to ship owners worldwide.

His many years of experience, both at sea and ashore commenced when he joined Bank Line in 1967.

In 1975, Dieter Jaenicke's sea going career came to an abrupt end as the result of an accident on board ship. After one year recovering from his accident, he joined Rowbotham Tankships, part of the Ingram Tankship Group, as Marine Personnel Officer which was his introduction into the Marine Personnel field. Skills gained in personnel and recruitment were enhanced when he joined E.B. Communications, part of the ABB group, to head up their new Management Services Division supplying Marine and Offshore staff to the Marine and Petro Chemical Industry in the North Sea. During this period he also acted as Personnel Manager for the E.B. Group in the United Kingdom where he learnt valuable and effective recruitment skills.

Since 1988, Viking Recruitment, with Dieter Jaenicke at the helm, has been supplying Deck, Engine and Radio Officers to cargo ship companies such as Splietoff's of Amsterdam, the container fleet of Nedlloyd Line and since 1989, Radio Officers on board the cruise fleet of Holland America Line. In 1991 Viking was approached by Holland America to produce a feasibility study on re-manning their Windstar fleet with British Officers. The contract was won and a comprehensive package put together which suited the Windstar portfolio and is still successful today.

With the success of Windstar, Holland America Line decided in 1995 to man the M.S "Veendam" - at that time their latest "new build" - with British Officers. This task was left to Viking who once again proved their ability to source and select some of the best and most suitable British Officers available. Following the smooth and effective introduction of the M.S. "Veendam" it was decided in 1999 that the M.S "Ryndam" would also benefit from being manned by British Officers. Viking again undertook this role and the vessel was transferred from Dutch Officers to British Officers in June 1999 but retaining Dutch registry. This was the first cruise vessel under the Dutch Flag to be manned and commanded by British Officers.

Today Holland America Line and Windstar Cruises remain one of our principal clients, but we also have an unparalleled portfolio of leading cruise and finest superyacht Clients.

The rest, as they say is history!!!!
